Puhua 鎮州普化

d. 860 | Teacher: Panshan Baoji

Tang-dynasty eccentric master, dharma heir of Panshan Baoji and third generation under Nanyue. A monk of Zhending prefecture, he hid himself in Zhenzhou and played the madman — feigning wildness, speaking without restraint, forever carrying a small bell and ringing it in people's ears. In 860, knowing his time had come, he shouldered his own coffin out the north gate and, still ringing the bell, climbed in and died. He runs through the Record of Linji as Linji Yixuan's foil and companion, and the Japanese Fuke (komusō) tradition later claimed him as its founder.
