Of the Xia clan of Fuling, a leading local family. He entered a monastery young and studied for years under Wansong; when Wansong died he went to Tiebi Huiji and received his transmission. He opened the dharma at two places — Huilong in Fu and Tanhua in Zhong — and died at Huilong at the age of fifty, which his stele-writer calls the kindness of dying at home. Disciples in both Fu and Zhong raised stupas for him. His record survives in a single fascicle; the man who wrote his stupa inscription admits he never met him and had not yet read it.
