Song-dynasty Yunmen-school master, a native of Lin'an and dharma heir of 天衣義懷 (Tianyi Yihuai, heir of 雪竇重顯). He was abbot of the 山谷寺 on 三祖山 in Shuzhou — the Third Patriarch's temple associated with 僧璨 — from which his name derives. Asked at his opening sermon what the first principle was, he answered 「百雜碎」 ('Smashed to a hundred pieces'); asked what the immovable Honoured One was, 「寸步千里」 ('An inch of step, a thousand miles').
