Shanhui Dashi 善慧大士

A LAYMAN of Wushang, born on the 8th of the 5th month of 497. He married Liu Miaoguang at sixteen and had two sons, Pujian and Pucheng. At twenty-four the ascetic Songtoutuo woke him up; he built a hut under the twin trees at Songshan, practised austerities seven years, and penetrated the Surangama. In 535 he was commanded to expound the sutra in the Chongyun Hall of Emperor Wu of Liang. As the Liang fell to the Chen and war spread he gathered a great following and had his disciples burn fingers and arms in offering. He wrote the Xinwang ming and the Huanyuan shi. With Baozhi of Jinling he is called one of the Two Great Beings of the Liang. He died on the 24th of the 4th month of 569.
