Lay surname Hou, of Xinning in Kuizhou; styled Zhuanjing (Brick Mirror), sobriquet Shanhui. Tonsured in 1638 by Shipu Zhuo. Wrestling with the Nanquan koan he forgot food and sleep, and then 'the ice broke up' at his teacher's snow-day address, after which his repartee ran free. He called on Wanfeng and Hongjue, and received the seal from Bao'en Tongxian (Fushi). He held Huguo at Pingyue, Wanshou at Xingqing, Sheng'en at Wengan, Changsong at Huangping, and Fuhai at Gaoyou. He died in 1687 and his stupa stands at Yongquan cloister on Tiger Hill, Suzhou.
