Chan master of Shuilao in Hongzhou, a dharma heir of Mazu Daoyi, 南嶽下二世. He asked Mazu the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West and Mazu kicked him square in the chest, knocking him flat; he got up clapping and laughing — 'How extraordinary! A hundred thousand dharma gates and measureless subtle meanings, all recognised at their source on the tip of a single hair!' — and bowed.
