Sin'gwang Chonghwi 神光宗暉

School: Korean Seon

The Seon master who ordained Jinul. Jinul's father, having prayed at the temple for his sickly son, gave the boy up at eight; Jinul 'went to the Seon master Chonghwi, a distant descendant of Caoxi, took tonsure and received the full precepts, and thereafter had no fixed master — he followed only the Way.' The record of Songgwangsa, written in 1207 while Jinul was still alive, says the same in its own words. Nothing else about him survives: his own teacher is named by no source I can reach.
