Fayan of Sizu shan in Qizhou, a native of Guizhou and a dharma heir of Huanglong Huinan, 臨濟宗 黃龍派, 南嶽下十二世. Asked what the attributes of mind are he said 'mountains, rivers, the great earth'; asked then what the substance of mind is, he turned it back: 'What do you call mountains and rivers?'
