Lantang Zhongren, a native of Luoyang who left home young at the Fengxian cloister in the Eastern Capital and was tonsured by imperial certificate in the early Xuanhe era. He mastered the sutras and sastras at the translation bureau but had no faith in the Chan school until he called on Yuanwu Keqin at Tianning: Yuanwu demanded 'Explain by the sutras and you slander the buddhas of the three times; depart one word from them and it is demon talk — speak, quick!' — and struck him across the mouth as he hesitated, knocking out a tooth, at which he greatly awakened. He later opened the hall at Dajue and moved to Zhongtianzhu and Lingfeng.
