Of the Chen clan of Shanghai (Yunjian). Tonsured at eighteen under Wuhai Xue and fully ordained at twenty. He called on Gunan Men and Xuedou Yun, then went to Ruo'an Tongwen at Jiashan, served him long, entered the inner chamber and received the transmission. He lived in retreat at Daqian and Puti in Qizhou, then held Li'an monastery at Nanjian in Hangzhou — where over four separate terms he was the fifth and longest-serving abbot — as well as Longyou at Jinshan and Zhulin at Jiashan. He also wrote the Liangzong jueyi in the Linji-Caodong lineage controversy. He died in 1694 aged 71, in his fifty-third year as a monk, and was entombed to the right of Li'an. Thirty men received his dharma.
