Tianzhu Chonghui 舒州天柱山崇慧

School: Niutou | d. 779 | Teacher: Oxhead Zhiwei

Tang-dynasty master of the Oxhead (Niutou) school, a native of Pengzhou of the Chen family and a dharma heir of 牛頭智威. In the early Qianyuan era (c. 758) he went to Mount Tianzhu in Shuzhou and founded a monastery there, which received its imperial name-plaque in 765. Asked what the Way is, he answered 「白雲覆青嶂,蜂蝶戀庭華」 — 'White clouds cover the green peaks; bees and butterflies love the courtyard blossoms.'
