Tieniu Chiding, Chan master of Lingyun in Hengzhou, a dharma heir of Xueyan Zuqin, 臨濟宗 南嶽下二十一世. He went seven days without closing his eyes until at midnight the whole world seemed snow and his single body could not be contained by heaven and earth; hearing the sounding-board struck he broke open, drenched in sweat, and his illness lifted at the same moment. When Zuqin later raised 'the dead monk is burnt — where does he go?' and answered himself, Chiding's doubt scattered and he came forward laughing that the stone lions before the hall were dancing.
