Song-dynasty Linji (Yangqi) master, sobriquet 卍庵, from Tongchuan of the Xianyu family, abbot of the 東林寺 at Jiangzhou. He trained long under 圓悟克勤 and gained a partial awakening; when Yuanwu returned to Shu he directed Daoyan to go to 大慧宗杲 (Miaoxi), sending a letter of introduction ahead of him — and it is under Dahui that the lamps record his transmission. His style is austere: 「須是入得無門之門,方可坐登堂奧」 ('You must enter the gateless gate before you can sit in the inner hall'), and he offers students only 「木札羹、鉄釘飯」 — woodchip soup and iron-nail rice.
