Wei'an Deran 唯菴德然

School: Linji | d. 1388 | Teacher: Qianyan Yuanzhang

Of the Zhang 張 family of Huating (Songjiang). At seven he recited the Lotus Sutra at Tianlong monastery in Hangzhou and was tonsured young under Wuyong Gui. He first saw Shiwu Qinggong, then heard Qianyan Yuanchang expound and broke through. Shiwu told him his affinity lay in Wusong and wrote out the two characters 松隱 for him; he returned home, built a hut south of Guohui and named it Songyin, hanging Shiwu's writing as its plaque, and did not cross its threshold for three years. He wrote out the Huayan Sutra in his own blood. When Qianyan died the assembly asked him to succeed to the seat. Summoned in the early Hongwu era as a man of the Way, he soon returned home ill. He built a seven-storey pagoda to house the blood-written sutra. He took leave of the assembly and died calmly on the fourteenth of the fourth month of 1388.
