Zhengdao of Wenshu in Changde, a native of Danleng in Meizhou surnamed Xu, ordained at thirty. He studied Yogacara at Chengdu and thought he had mastered it, until a fellow resident floored him: 'The three realms are mind only, the ten thousand dharmas consciousness only — but with the myriad forms clattering right in front of you, where are mind and consciousness?' He could not answer, left the pass, wandered the Jiang-Huai region, and on reaching Taiping in Shuzhou heard Fojian's night convocation and became his heir.
