Wu'an Puning 兀菴普寧

School: Linji | 1199–1276 | Teacher: Wuzhun Shifan

Linji master of the Song who carried the school to Japan. From western Shu, he left home at Jiangshan, then went to Wuzhun Shifan at Jingshan and laboured under him for several years; in 1235 Shifan sent him on to Chijue Daochong. He first held the Lingyan Guangfu cloister at Xiangshan in Qingyuan. In 1260 he was invited to Japan and became the second abbot of Kenchō-ji at Kamakura, where he taught the regent Hōjō Tokiyori. He returned to China in 1265 and spent his last years at Longxiang on Jiangxinshan in Wenzhou, dying on the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month of 1276 at seventy-eight. Posthumously titled Chan Master Zongjue. The Japanese know him as Gottan Funei.
