Wushan Jingduan 吳山淨端

School: Yunmen | 1031–1104 | Teacher: Longhua Qiyue

Lay surname Qiu, of Gui'an in Wuxing; styled Mingbiao, self-styled the Reverend At-Ease. At barely six he served Baoxian at Jiekong cloister on Mt Wu; he did not get the monk's robe until twenty-six. Watching a lion-dance he suddenly matched the mind-dharma, and went on to receive the essentials of the Surangama from the Tiantai master Renyue. Then he met Chan master Qiyue (Baojue); their meeting struck fire, and he leapt up unbidden and threw himself into the posture of a lion - which Qiyue approved, and from then on the monasteries elegantly nicknamed him 'Duan the Lion'. Chancellor Zhang Dun admired his way and invited him in person to open the dharma at Wushan; he later moved to Xiyu in Huzhou. He died on 5/12 of 1103, aged 74, with 49 dharma-years.
