Lay surname Tao (陶), of Taihe in Ji'an; a dharma heir of Xiaoweng Miaokan (1177-1248), nineteenth generation below Huineng. He came out as abbot of Jianfu monastery in Raozhou in the sixth month of 1227, moved to Kaixian on Lushan, and returned to Jianfu in 1229. He wrote the accounts-of-conduct (行狀) of his own teacher Xiaoweng and of Chijue Daochong — the two are quoted as authorities on monastic layout in later handbooks. His heir was Yusou Chengjian. He died in 1271, aged 59. His dharma name is written both 道燦 and 道璨.
