From Fuqing in Fujian (surname Chen), turned toward the gate by chancing on the Zhengmai in a temple at Wushan, tonsured at nineteen. He worked three years on the character wu without result, changed to 'the ten thousand dharmas return to one' under Wuyi at Gushan, then found real footing under Miyun Yuanwu at Huangbo, was ordained by him, and followed him out of Fujian to Jinsu — where, by his own account, six years of toil left him still unmatched. He was finally sealed by Poshan Haiming, whom he followed into Sichuan and served as western-hall elder. He opened Longpan, Nianhua, Baolin and Lengqie, held Huangbo twice, and died in the 7th month of 1651, aged 54.
