Of Cixi in Mingzhou, surname Mao; hao Xiaoweng. Ordained in 1197. He studied with Yeying Daoqin, then Xue'an Guan at Jinshan, then Songyuan Chongyue at Lingyin — and connected with none of them. He went at last to Wuyong Jingquan at Tiantong; as he opened his mouth Wuyong struck him across it with the bamboo staff, and he answered on the instant with a verse — 'the great poison-smeared drum, it shakes heaven and earth; turn your head, and corpses lie ten thousand li' — which Wuyong approved. He held Miaosheng, Jinwen and Guangxiao in Mingzhou, Bao'en in Tai, Huqiu at Pingjiang and Xuefeng in Fuzhou, and was ordered by decree to Lingyin. Prince Shi of Wei built Daci monastery in Mingzhou and made him its founding abbot. He later held Ruiyan, Jiangxin, Jingci, Tiantong and Ayuwang. Died 1248 aged 72.
