Xiaoyin Daxin 笑隱大訢

School: Linji | 1284–1344 | Teacher: Huiji Yuanxi | Students: Jie'an Yongzhen Fuliang

Lay surname Chen (陳), of Nanchang; a dharma heir of Huiji Yuanxi (1238-1319), twenty-first generation below Huineng. He left home at Shuilu cloister, first called on Yishan of Kaixian, then went to Huiji Yuanxi. In 1328 the Yuan emperor Wenzong turned his former princely residence at Jinling into the monastery Longxiang Jiqing and ordered Daxin to open it — one of the most powerful monastic offices of the age; he was made Grand Master of the Palace (太中大夫) and titled Chan Master Guangzhi Quanwu. Under Emperor Shundi he was commanded to revise the Baizhang Rules (敕修百丈清規). His heirs included Zongle and Zhengzu. He died in 1344, aged 61, with 46 years in robes.
