Xingjiao Ming 興教明

School: Fayan | Teacher: Tiantai Deshao

Tenth-century Chan monk, abbot (上座 / 和尚) of Xingjiao in Yunzhou. He is known almost entirely from a single celebrated encounter: he challenged Tiantai Deshao with a question about Kasyapa's robe and Maitreya's thousand-foot body, stormed out at Deshao's answer, then vomited blood for seven days; urged by Fuguang, he repented before Deshao and vowed lifelong service. He also appears delivering a letter in a 勘辯 exchange preserved in the Xu gu zunsu yuyao.
