Tang-dynasty Chan master of Xiuxi in Tanzhou (Hunan), counted among the dharma heirs of Mazu Daoyi. He is known chiefly from his exchange with Gushan on 'sound and form are purely real — what is the Way?', in which Gushan paced east and west, seized him as he stepped down from the meditation seat, and received a slap; Gushan then laughed aloud.
