School: Linji | b. 1614 | Teacher: Qiran Chaozhi | Students: Zhitan Zuizheng

Born 1614 in Zi county, Chengdu, Sichuan; his father was Zhou Chaofu, his mother of the Rao clan, a family of the Embroidered-Uniform Guard. He was a child when the She chieftain's rebellion broke out in 1621; his father, telling him that 'because the world is not level there are wars and killings,' let him go, and he was placed at Jiulong monastery in Fushun county under Xingtian. He was taught by his father and his master for twelve years, until both died in the spring of 1633 — whereupon, reflecting that 'yesterday's is gone by this morning, and the morning's gone by evening,' he went to the elder Yinxin at Fujia hermitage. He became the heir of QIRAN CHAOZHI. He was abbot of Xilai monastery at Anlu in Hubei from 1657, and in 1680 succeeded his own master at Huanglong on Mt Baizhang, Xiangyang.
