Tang-dynasty master of the 西園蘭若 on Mount Nanyue, who received the mind-seal from 馬祖道一 and afterwards called on 石頭希遷, becoming (in the lamp's phrase) 「瑩然明徹」 — lucidly clear. Under him the Xiyuan community grew steadily. He is remembered for a wry exchange preserved in the koan literature: asked why, having no novices or postulants, he heated his own bathwater, he simply clapped three times — a gesture 曹山本寂 later compared, not altogether kindly, to Judi's one-finger Chan.
