Xuechao Fayi 萬年雪巢法一

School: Linji | 1084–1158 | Teacher: Caotang Shanqing

Song-dynasty Linji (Huanglong) master (1084–1158), personal name 法一, sobriquet 雪巢, also styled 貫道 — a great-great-grandson of Li Zunmian, Prince of Xiangyang, whose family lived at Xiangfu in Kaifeng. He received the dharma from 草堂善清 (1057–1142) at Shushan, headed four great monasteries, then retired from Changlu and returned to the 萬年觀音院 on Mount Tiantai. Falling lightly ill, he wrote his death verse — 「今年七十五,歸作庵中主。珎重觀世音,泥蛇吞石虎」 ('Seventy-five this year, I go back to be master of the hut; farewell, Guanyin — the clay snake swallows the stone tiger') — then sat cross-legged in his coffin and died.
