Song-dynasty Linji master, personal name 仲謙, sobriquet 大歇, of the Ying family of Yiwu; abbot of 雪竇 in Mingzhou (Qingyuan). A boyhood reading of Fu Dashi's 心王銘 set him on the monastic path. His first teacher 息菴 valued him but held him down: 'You are a Confucian — with those habits unshed, how can you study the Way? You must reach the ground of great rest and great cessation (大休大歇), and go like a wooden puppet.' The rebuke stuck, and when he finally had an opening he took 大歇 as his own name. His full awakening came under 松源崇嶽 (1132–1202), in the room, on the case of Mimo's forked staff. He has his own heir-section in the lamps.
