Southern Song Linji (Huanglong) master (1096–1158), 福州雪峯東山慧空禪師, dharma heir of 草堂善清 (1057–1142) and reckoned the fifteenth generation below the Sixth Patriarch. Tonsured at fourteen, he studied 圜悟克勤 at Yunju alongside 大慧宗杲 (妙喜) before going on to serve 草堂 at Shushan, who transmitted to him. He opened the dharma at Xuefeng and later retired to the East Hermitage (東菴), from which his alternate name 東山慧空 comes. His disciple 慧弼 compiled his 語錄 in one fascicle (X69n1346).
