Xuzhou Pudu 虛舟普度

School: Linji | 1199–1280 | Teacher: Wude Juetong | Students: Yushan Dezhen, Huyan Jingfu

From Jiangdu in Weiyang (surname Shi), sent at twelve to the Tianning monastery of his prefecture; he was tonsured by Shaolin Song of Jingci, given the robe by Tieniu Yin of Lingyin, and took Longxi Zuxin of the Dongtang cloister as his teacher of record, serving him five years. Roused one night by the thought that Bodhidharma's heirs had been ordinary men like himself, he set out at dawn and travelled the south, coming at last to Wude Juetong, who was then preaching Songyuan's dharma at Jianfu in Poyang; he followed him to Fuyan and Huazang and was matched to him 'as lodestone to iron.' Coming out at Banshan in Jiankang in the early Chunyou years, he raised the incense as Wude's heir. He held Jinshan, Luyuan, Shushan, Chengtian, Zhong Tianzhu and Lingyin, was summoned to Jingshan in 1277, and died on the 24th of the 4th month of 1280, aged 82.
