Linji (Huanglong branch) master (1019-1081), full title 袁州仰山行偉禪師. A native of Heshuo 河朔. He began from study of the Yuanjue (Perfect Enlightenment) Sutra, and when doubts arose took up the travelling bag to seek the ancestral meaning. He spent six years in Huanglong Huinan's assembly; one day, pressing Huinan with a question, he was shouted out of the room, and as his foot crossed the threshold he abruptly awakened to the profound import. He then taught at Mt. Yang (Yangshan) in Yuanzhou, where his teaching flourished, leaving eight dharma-heirs.
