Yanju Deshen 雲山燕居申德申

School: Linji | 1610–1678 | Teacher: Poshan Haiming

From Zhongnan in western Shu (surname Li), tonsured at nineteen under Daxiu Xian and trained in Yogacara and the Lankavatara under the treatise-master Gaoyuan Yu. Illness at Diaoyucheng convinced him that doctrine was not enough and he turned to Chan. When Poshan Haiming returned from Tiantong to Sichuan and was installed at Taiping in Liangshan, he went to him; after several rebuffs, the sight of a collapsing mound of earth broke him open 'like the bottom falling out of a bucket.' He received Poshan's dharma in 1643, held seven monasteries across Guizhou, and died on the 15th of the 8th month of 1678, aged 69, with forty-three dharma-heirs.
