Yanxi Guangwen 偃溪廣聞

School: Linji | 1189–1263 | Teacher: Zhewong Ruyan | Students: Yunfeng Miaogao

Lay surname Lin, of Houguan (Fuzhou). At fifteen his parents put him with his uncle Zhilong at Guangxiao in Wanling; he took the full precepts at eighteen. He called first on Tieniu Yin and travelled widely among the elders, keeping long company with Shaoshi Mu and Wuji Pai. He met Zheweng Ruyan at Tiantong - 'needle and mustard-seed found each other' - but knowing he was not yet settled he went to him again at Shuangjing, and there his lifelong doubt melted at a stroke. From 1228 he held Xiao Jingci, and then Xiangshan, Wanshou, Xuedou, Ayuwang, Jingci, Lingyin and finally Jingshan. In 1261 he was granted the title Fozhi chanshi. He died on 14/6 of 1263, aged 75, with 58 summers. His heir Yunfeng Miaogao carried the line on.
