Of the Ye clan of Changshou in Yuzhou, born on the fifth of the third month, 1623 — a farming family, three generations at the plough. The wars destroyed his home: 'From Tianqi 1, when the rebels broke Yuzhou, to the jiashen year of Sizong, east and west of Shu, north and south of Ba, fields, houses, fathers and brothers were burned and slaughtered to nothing.' Orphaned and alone, he fled south to Qianzhou, met a monk from home, wept, and swore: 'If I do not leave home now, may I go the way of the old men of my village.' He was shaved by Dongming Xiao and named Fuhui, styled Sixiu. In 1652 a monk from Longmen told him of his master; he went, was shouted out of the room at the first meeting, and set to work on 'the ten thousand dharmas return to one.' He received the seal from Shanhui Wanbi (Zhuanjing) at Longmen and held Ciyun, Zhulin at Menghua, Wufu at Shunning, Fahua at Fumin, Mile at Chengjiang, and finally Songshan in Yizhou.
