Surnamed Cao, of Danghu in Jiaxing. He asked his father to teach him the sūtras at ten, was working at the school of the ancestors at fifteen, and at twenty broke wide open; he took Xingshan Hongyuan as his tonsure master. Serving Puming (Yuanhu Miaoyong), he was asked 'My mind is uneasy — have you found peace yet?' and answered only 'Blue heaven! Blue heaven!' Another day Miaoyong raised a fist: 'Say a word.' Wuyuan slapped him; Miaoyong roared with laughter, and the thing was settled. He then sealed himself in retreat at Xingshan for more than ten years, came out to Yongzheng monastery in 1651, and died on the nineteenth of the fifth month, 1678, aged sixty-four.
