Of the Qian clan of Kuaiji, Shaoxing, descended from the royal house of Wu-Yue; born on the twenty-seventh day of the fourth month of 1634. His father, childless at thirty-seven, prayed to Guanyin, and his mother dreamed a Tiantai monk entered the room. Born with his eyes sealed shut for forty days, he was opened (says his own account) after a wandering monk told his parents the child's pure eye simply would not yet look on filth. He was tonsured at twenty-two, ordained four months later, called on Yunyan of Liling and Erzhan of Shishuang, and awakened watching a waterfall fall from the sky on Mount Huangyan. He called on Yulin Tongxiu, Muyun, and Hongjue, and finally received the mind-seal from Yuan'an at Tiantong. He held Yuezhang Shousheng, Yonglong at Jingshan, Shending Zisheng, Ruiyan and Tiantong.
