He lost his mother at three and his father in boyhood, took a wife of the Wang clan at thirteen to eke out a living with his stepmother, and at fifteen left the world for the Haihui hall in his own prefecture under the elder Taixu; his wife died soon after. Fully ordained at eighteen. In 1666 he went south; his master told him 'here we do not know Chan — Zhaojue in western Shu is Yuanwu come again; go and see him.' He went to Zhangxue Tongzui, who slapped him across the face and later set him on the 'original face' case, but after some years he made no headway and left, calling on Changpo, Danzhu and Lianyue with no result. Finally he came to Nouyun at Caotang and received the transmission in 1669. He was abbot at Guhuang and the Dabei cloister in Guanxi.
