Lay surname Chen, of Xianyou in Xinghua (Fujian); sobriquet Yisou. As a child he was tonsured by Donglin of Mt Lian. Grown, he called on Chaozong Shilin and others, who set him on the koan 'the ten thousand dharmas return to one'. He then went to Feiyin at Jinsu, and one night, hearing the bell, had an opening. He went again to Wanru Tongwei at Longchi and received the dharma. He was abbot of Tongtian Chan monastery in Fujian. He died on 12/3 of 1669, aged 54, with 40 dharma-years; his stupa is on the eastern slope of Mt Lian. He left a fascicle of recorded sayings and a collection of poems, the Jipiao ji. His heir was Danya Chaoyuan.
