Fayan-house master, 杭州永明寺道潛禪師, died 961. A native of Hezhong prefecture 河中府, surname Wu 武. He came to Fayan Wenyi already a Huayan specialist; Wenyi asked which gate the six characteristics (總別同異成壞) belonged to, and Daoqian answered from the Ten Stages chapter that all worldly and world-transcending dharmas possess them. Wenyi then asked whether emptiness also possesses the six characteristics; Daoqian was struck dumb, so Wenyi told him to put the question back — and to Daoqian's 「空還具六相也無?」 answered simply 「空」. At that Daoqian awakened and bowed in delight. He is the Daoqian of Yongming monastery in Hangzhou, the house later made famous by Yongming Yanshou.
