School: Yunmen | 1027-1090 | Teacher: Xuedou Chongxian
Originally from Longcheng in Qinzhou (present-day Tianshui, Gansu). Entered monastic life at age three at Yingqian Monastery on Mount Maiji. After serving as abbot at several monasteries including Qixian on Mount Lu and Changlu Chongfu, he was appointed the first abbot of Fayun Monastery in the capital Kaifeng by Emperor Shenzong in 1084, receiving the honorific "Yuantong." Closely connected with Song literati including Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, Wang Anshi, and the painter Li Gonglin.
