Of the Chen clan of Ziyang, Chengdu, born on the twenty-fourth day of the first month of 1613. In his own account, a corpse in a stream being eaten by fish turned his mind to impermanence; asked his tutor over the Analects line 'hearing the Way in the morning, one may die at evening' where the Way is when the breath does not return, and got no answer, he shut the book and resolved to leave home, starving himself for days until his parents relented. He was tonsured at Baofeng monastery on Jingju mountain. He called on Xinxuan, Yinxin, Miyun Yuanwu and Wanfeng, then late in life entered Tiantai and attended Linye Tongqi for seven years, receiving the seal. He held ten seats over his life, the longest being the ancient Fengxue monastery in Ruzhou, which he restored. He died at Jinsu cloister in Xincai on the thirteenth day of the fourth month of 1676, aged 64.
