Northern Song Yunmen-house master, 衡州南嶽雲峰元益禪師, also styled 雲峯元益首座 (head seat). A dharma-heir of Xuedou Chongxian, he taught at Yunfeng on Mt. Nanyue in Hengzhou. The lamp preserves his encounter with the official Li Linzong, who asked how to leave the dust of the world; when Li presented an awakening verse (「心鏡從來瑩…沙石化為金」) Yuanyi cut him down with 「正趣地獄」 — 'straight to hell with you' — and Li replied 「覿面不識」, face to face and still not recognising. Li Linzong went on to become Yuanyi's sole recorded dharma-heir.
