Song Chan master of Yungai in Tanzhou, a native of Jianzhou, surname Chen. Humbled by Fachang Yu ('in Wu there is a stone buddha many have never managed to see'), he then studied long with Cuiyan Kezhen without insight, and finally resolved all his doubts under Huanglong Huinan at Jicui, becoming his heir. He was head seat at Shishuang, opened the dharma at Daowu, and later moved to Yungai. Doushuai Congyue and Jiufeng Xiguang both sought him out — he sent Congyue off to 'go study in that piss-stink' of Dongshan Wen.
