Northern Song Linji (Yangqi) master (1035-1107), 潭州雲蓋山智本禪師. A native of Gao'an in Yunzhou, surname Guo 郭; he passed the sutra examination at nineteen, was fully ordained the next year, and set out travelling at once. In the years when Yunju Xiaoshun and Kaixian Xian led the foremost assemblies on Mt. Lu he moved between the two, then heard that Fahua Duan (Baiyun Shouduan) was a true den of the dharma, went to him, and stayed ten years — after which his name carried far. Li Duanchen, prefect of Shuzhou, invited him to preach at Longmen; he later returned to Mt. Lu, and when Chancellor Zeng went out to govern Changsha he installed him with full ceremony at Falun on Nanyue, where students vied to follow him. He went on to Nantai, Daolin, Yungai, Shishuang and Jiashan, and on the Lantern Festival night of Daguan 1 (1107) bathed, changed his robes, sat upright and died at Jiashan, aged 73 with 52 years in robes.
