Fayan-house master (929-997), 洪州雲居道齊禪師, reckoned the 11th generation from Huineng. A native of Hongzhou, surname Jin 金; he was ordained under Mingzhao of Mt. Baizhang and travelled the Chan assemblies without his questing mind settling, until he met Fadeng (Qingliang Taiqin) and the connection took at once. When Fadeng took up Shanglan cloister, Daoqi headed the sutra library. He taught in three places over thirty years — Dayu at Gao'an, Shuanglin at Yougushan, and finally Mt. Yunju — and compiled the 搜玄, 拈古 and 代別 collections, which circulated widely in the monasteries. In the 9th month of Zhidao 3 (997) he fell ill; on the 8th he had the bell rung to assemble the community and delivered the address the batch cites — 「老僧今日火風相逼,特與諸人相見,諸人還見麼!」 (fire and wind press me today; I meet you all one last time — do you see?) — entrusted the mountain gate to Qigui, and died as soon as the assembly dispersed, aged 69 with 48 years in robes.
