Song monk, lay surname Hu, of Taizhou Linhai. Tonsured and ordained under 護國瑞禪師 (a distinct tonsure master — not to be conflated with his dharma teacher). Traveled widely, then went to Longmen and presented his understanding to Foyan Qingyuan; Foyan told him this was mere intellectual understanding, not true awakening, and set him to work in the kitchen, where he later broke through. Confirmed as Foyan's dharma heir.
