Five-Dynasties/early-Song Fayan-house master, 雲居山義能禪師, a dharma-heir of Baoci Xingyan of Jinling and thus in the third generation of the Fayan house. The lamp preserves his answer to the question 'What is Buddha?' — 「即心是佛」 — and, when the monk pleaded that he did not understand and begged for expedient means, his follow-up: 「方便呼為佛，迴光返照看身心是何物」 (as an expedient it is called Buddha; turn the light around and look back — what are this body and mind?).
