Born in Anchang, Sichuan. Dharma brother of Hongzhi Zhengjue under Danxia Zichun. Key figure in the Caodong revival during the Southern Song. Abbot of Changlu and Tiantong monasteries. His emphasis on silent illumination (mozhao) drew Dahui Zonggao's famous critiques. 10th patriarch of the Caodong lineage; his line leads through Tiantong Zongjue to Tiantong Rujing and eventually to Dogen, founder of Japanese Soto Zen.
