Zhiyan Xiu 芝巖秀

From Dazhou in western Shu, lay surname Luo. He heard the Diamond Sutra at seven and was tonsured at eight by the long-browed monk of Lanhua monastery. He went to Wutai in the famine years of the late Ming, then south — to Yunwo, to Gunan Muyun (who gave him 'your face before your parents were born'), to Judé at Tianning, to Xuedou, Yunmen and Tiantong, and finally spent twelve years under Yulin Tongxiu at Bao'en. In 1661 he passed through Yixing, sparred with Eryin Mi, and received a whisk and verse. He held the Shuiyue Chan cloister at Jiangling and Tanhua monastery at Zhijiang, and edited Eryin Mi's record in ten fascicles.
