泉州法石中庵慧空禪師 (1106–1174), a native of Ganxian in Ganzhou, lay surname 蔡. A scholar in his youth, he took the tonsure only at thirty-six at the prefectural Guanyin cloister, then found insight with Yangshan Zu; next he studied with Cuiyan Guangzhao Deng, who found his talk congenial and put him in charge of correspondence. He received transmission from Hui'an Miguang, a leading heir of Dahui Zonggao, and taught at Fashi in Quanzhou.
