Of the Shen clan of Songzhou; his father was named Lun, his mother of the Ren clan. Born on the eighth day of the fourth month of 1660. His mother dreamed Guanyin told her the child was no householder and must be given a good name. Sent at one year old to Rushan at Miaojue monastery, he was ordained under Shenghui. Reading the Lotus at a donor's request, he stuck on the line 'the father young, the son old', found no one to ask, and left Songzhou for Zhaojue. He served a year under Zhangxue, went home, sealed himself in for three years, and returned to Zhaojue, where Foyuan Chegang now held the seat; after being beaten out of the abbot's room and struck repeatedly on the path, he broke through and received the transmission. He held Zhaojue at Weifeng, Chongshan, Dabei, Wuliang and Fazang. His discourse record runs to six fascicles; his heirs number eighty-three monks and six laymen.
